Superb photos & great all round site. My wife and I are Australians living in NYC. We're off to Zermatt Feb 26th - can't wait to immerse ourselves in the whole experience, especially the ski into Italy and back. Will be sure to report back via this page to other potential first timers around mid March. Thanks for the inspiration and valued info!!!

I visited Zermatt from 30.01.1999-06.02.1999. Liked it very much!! Nice (prepared) pistes, much snow, much sunshine and very cosy pubs and bars. There is one thing...the difference between a blue and a red piste is not always very big in Zermatt...so ask people about how the piste is if you can't ski very well. A nice practicing piste is down at Sunnegga. Greetings, Hugo van der Flier, Holland.

This page was very nice. I am doing a German project on Switzerland and I found this page to be the most helpful. Out of all my resources, this was the best. I also love to snowboard. After seeing this page I really want to travel to Switzerland to snowboard. Zermatt looks like a pretty cool city and I wouldn't mind travelling there this summer before I go to college.

We leave on February 11 for Zermatt, and I can't wait! The pictures on this site are outstanding, and I can't wait to see the views for myself! I'm a little worried about the scarcity of snow, however. Anyone skied there recently that can comment?

It is currently snowing.. Conditions will be great for your arrival !    Follow the What's New?  page for weather and snow reports.

We were in Zermatt from 16-23 January and had a wonderful weeks skiing. The sun shone all week and the scenery was stunning. We would love to visit again - possible in the summer to allow us to see and do everything that Zermatt has to offer. Thanks to the "North Wall" pub - it was great to have such a good place to go in the evenings.

Hi : I promised to report back about Zermatt. Here goes....
TOWN: Beautiful, I loved walking around at night
SKIING: Varied, snow was a little scarce but the three areas for skiing gave me plenty to enjoy, and you cannot appreciate the Matterhorn until you see it from all its angles! We had sunny skies for the week!
HOTELS: Swiss class! Excellent food, great hoteliers! Big hello to the Hotel Orion!
FOOD: Mountain chalets were incredible. I salivate thinking about Chez Vrony in Findeln where we dined for three hours!!
BEST SKIING DAY: Skiing across to Italy, what an adventure. While working my way back down to Switzerland while the sun was setting, the sled dogs on the mountain were howling across the valley with the Matterhorn glistening in the background, an "other world" experience that I will never forget!! Thanks Zermatt, will see you again, I'm sure!! JOHN

Great to hear back from you John. It is always so nice to hear back from people.

My first visit to Zermatt was in 1986 and I will be returning on Feb. 26th for my 2nd visit. Quite a lot has changed in my life personally since that first visit but one thing that hasn't is a small group of friends that I first met on that trip in 1986. The Bucks County Ski Club was running a trip and I was invited to go by a friend who was a member. On the plane ride to Europe I met a diverse group of people and skied, partied, laughed and enjoyed Zermatt with them for the next ten days. A small contingent of that group has continued to ski on a trip somewhere together every year since the first Zermatt trip. We've become good friends who socialize throughout the year and I've always felt that the magic of Zermatt brought us all together for life. Over the last 12 years we've travelled to many wonderful ski locations but I look forward to Zermatt more than any other location. Hope to see you there and make new friends for life.

The first time I visited Zermatt, I was 15. I am now 52 and Zermatt stays the best place in the mountains among many others. Zermatt is always a real village with a particular feeling of being alone, so far away from the rest of the world, so far away from the troubles of one's life, and so near to anyone who knows Zermatt. Just have walk at night in Zermatt and you'll feel in love with this place. And it never ends.

You have one of the better web pages I've seen! The pictures are magnificent. Some information I would like to know, but didn't find are: Average temperatures in Zermatt each month of the year, more information about the hiking trails (i.e. distances, what type of provisions are at the huts), and the Trift Hotel (I didn't see it in the hotel list.) Can't wait to visit.

Good questions...I'll answer some of them here. Mountain huts are normally  3-5 hours hiking time above Zermatt. Water, soft drinks, beer and (sometimes) meals are available. Blankets are provided. Best to phone just in advance to confirm they have place. Naturally food is not very cheap since everything has to be helicoptered in. Most people bring their own stuff. Ed.

If you meet a guy called Dan Graf out there (resort rep for about 11 hotels) give him a wave from me---cos he's my brother.... Have been there twice. Plan on going back next year. We have stayed at the Zermatterhoff, and at the Butterfly. Anyone going to Zermatt must and stop by the Underground Bar. What a blast. They even let you smash your empty beer glasses and shot glasses when your done with them. The skiing was outstanding, and the people were excellent... Can't say enough good things about it. Also just wanted to say, anyone from Connecticut who would like to get together and plan a group trip from CONNECTICUT, PLEASE email me and let me know. We are trying to get some group rates to make things a little easier in the pocket. Thanks Switzerland, you are my home away from home. Jason

We got back on December 18th from a week in Zermatt where we had a truly wonderful and memorable time. We stayed at Mont Cervin (which we booked through your site) and just loved it there. The service was impeccable and the hotel was very romantic. We also enjoyed the great weather, wonderful skiing (the slopes were practically empty as you likely know) and the wacky and wonderful people we met. We partied pretty hard with some great people we met in Le Mazot (Mary the bar tender and some locals) and they could not have been nicer to us. I had dreamed for many years of seeing Zermatt and that dream was realized due, to a large extent, to your site - it inspired me, made planning the trip easy (and less intimidating) and encouraged me to save my money. The trip could not have been better and it was the best way to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. I am certain we will be back some day. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! I wish there was a way I could return the favor for what you have given us this past year.

I am really glad you had such a great time. It was wonderful to hear back from you. Ed.

Comments: Awesome info and pics of Zermatt! Your web site has been far more informative than any other web site (and even the Fodors book on Switzerland!) used to plan our upcoming Zermatt trip. One question: I noticed that the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof (we were contemplating staying there) is not included in your recommended hotel list; is there some reason for its omission? Thanks again! Monty

The Zermatterhof is indeed a fine hotel. We hope to include details about  it and many others very soon.. Ed.

In the summer you can hike along beautiful trails, have a delicious lunch at a mountainside restaurant, see breathtaking views of the majestic Matterhorn, and take cable car rides the way people take the subway here in N.Y.C. The hotels are all magnificent chalets and flowers are everywhere. The people are very pleasant and speak English, French, and German. This little town is a jewel that every hiker must come to.It is a sort of El Dorado.

Comments: I love Zermatt! This is where my mother learned how to ski, where my brother and I learned to ski and where I'm going to teach my children to ski. I like the old parts of Zermatt and the walks up to the restaurants in the mountains at night and even more the tour down on a slide. If you haven't been there you should go!!!

Comments: I visited Zermatt two years ago during a two week Swiss hiking trip. I was enthralled. I took the Gornergratbahn to the sightseeing place up top - what a wonderful sight. Sitting here in Indiana surfing the net, I happened to run across this wonderful sight. I have looked at other great sites with photos of other places in Die Schweiz I have been to, but this one has the best photos by far. Die Schweiz (I like to use the German name for some reason) will always mean something special to me. The majestic scenery and the wonderful towns and people all add up to a truly great place. The photographs you have on this page remind me of the splendid beauty of this country. When I go back some day (when I have the money), I will be sure to include Zermatt in my travel plans. Thank you very much for creating such a wonderful page.

Comments: Visited just one day back in 1972. Never could get the clouds to stay on the Italian side, so I hope you don't mind that I printed several from your collection. This is a beautiful web-site about a beautiful place. I guess my two favorite places for scenery are Zermatt and Ouray, Colorado. I hope to be able to visit again soon... Please note my family name is a rare combination of German words. My grandmother's maiden name was Schneider, and her family came from somewhere in Switzerland. Perhaps someday I'll find out where. Sorry...longwinded, as usual...

It is fine to print out any photos on this website for your own personal use. I love to take them and I am very glad when others also take pleasure in them.  Ed.

I visited Zermatt on my first skiing vacation together with my brother in february 1974 and still 24 years and about 400-500 skiing days later, I´m sure this was the most wonderful trip of my life. I really hope, that everyone interested in this kind of vacation, will get the opportunity to get here.

My reason for posting this, tho, was to inquire whether someone out there would possibly know Eddie Petrig (l think that's his last name)...you know he's the 82 yr old guide that still actually guides and who owns the restaurant La Taverne (and hotel). Well, please inform him that 'the girl' says hello and she will return as soon as she's able to, hopefully summer 99.

I must say there is a diference skiing between Italy and Switzerland. We noticed the difference. What I liked the most were the beautiful ski-slopes covered with snow. The nature is beautiful, not to mention the Matterhorn looking from Zermatt - the gracious and delightful peak. The last thing I must mention is the gondolas and the ski-lift system. I have never seen a so well organised system. Well, that would be all.

I plan on climbing the Matterhorn on my next visit but would like to do so with others interested in doing the standard route without the services of a local guide. It's not just a matter of cost, but I would acheive much more excitement out of climbing the mountain on a less commercial basis. Comments: I think this site is great -- very informative for anyone who is headed to Zermatt. I've been there twice and it is one of my favorite cities in Europe, if not my favorite. The first time was with my family 9 years ago, the second time was Sept.'97. The views are magnificent, the people are very friendly, and the town is charming. On both of my visits I stayed at Hotel Alpenblick, which I would highly recommend. It's a 3 star hotel, very nice large rooms, and incredible views of the Matterhorn (it's one of the closest hotels to the Matterhorn). I also recommend Cafe Du Pont: we read that it is the oldest restaurant in Zermatt and it served the best cheese fondue we've ever had. If I remember correctly, it is near the big church. If anyone is interested, we put up a personal travelogue of our recent trip to Zermatt (the link is below my name -- "Postcards from Europe").

I skied Zermatt several times and always had a fantastic experience there and will always return. Comments: Hi.... It's spring in Australia....which makes me think of Zermatt. I spent Christmas at The Hotel Biner in 1985 and I have wanted to return ever since. I don't know who I'm writing to (or *why* for that matter). I cherish my memories of 3 years skiing in France and Zermatt.

Comments: We will be honeymooning in Cervinia in Feb. 98. We would like to ski over the mountain down into Zermatt and then ski back again. It this possible? Do we need our passports with us? Would we be able to find a place to stay for the night? Have you, or do you know anyone that has done this? Thanks for any answers. I have heard first hand that Zermatt is the place to go for fun. Craig

This is a very good question! I can personally recommend skiing over to Cervinia and staying the night. I myself have done it and found it to be tremendous fun! I can assure you it is also very romantic. It's not difficult - requiring only a couple of hours. Simply ski over with a small pack containing what you need for a night - and take note - alcohol is duty free in Cervinia! Officially of course, passports are required, however there is no checkpoint. You are free to ski between the two countries at will. Suprisingly few people actually do this, and as mentioned in my site the atmosphere is very different in Cervinia. It always feels to me like quite an adventure. Finding a place to stay shouldn't be a problem if you avoid the weekend. Just visit the tourist office in the main street for helpful advice on where to stay - open until 6pm or so. (Please don't ask me!)

Comments: Early one morning at the Schweizerhof Hotel in Zermatt I stepped out on the deck and immediately saw the Matterhorn covered with fresh snow and the bright sunlight shining on it. I stood there in awe at the beautiful sight, then called to my wife to come and see it. This is a memory that will stay with me forever. That morning a trip to the Gornergrat for some lunch and another great view of the Matterhorn and a photo will also be remembered for a long time.

Comments: Great site - I really need to visit. What is the best time of year for price and great powder runs (the steeper and deeper the better) ? That is what I am looking for.

Big early season snowfalls from late November often produce fantastic powder conditions. Prices are also very low until about the 20th of December, and you'll have the area pretty much to yourself. ;) Of course snow can fall at any time, but January and February often consist of a few big dumps followed by extended periods of fine weather. March and April tend to have more regular snowfalls, and many of Zermatt's high altitude areas really come into their own...

Comments: Fantastic web site. Everything is so well laid out and easy to get around. There are no telling how many web sites out there I, and others, have backed out of because of the difficulty of getting around.

Thanks for your help.

Comments: I visited Zermatt during a summer college program during 1983. It was amazing to ski during the Summer. Although it was a little slushy at the bottom of the hill, it was a blast and something I will never forget. Thanks for keeping your ski area open year-round. I hope to visit again soon.
