Close up of Breithorn

A view from the summit of the Klein Matterhorn east towards the nearby Breithorn - which is a popular climb for ski mountaineers in spring. In this photo note the many spectacular ice cliffs and crevasses. Crevasses (deep cracks in the ice) are common features of glaciers and many are hundreds of feet deep. Whilst skiing on the clearly marked trails is perfectly safe, it can be very dangerous to ski off-piste (out-of-bounds) on Zermatt's glaciers without a local ski guide, due to the danger of hidden crevasses.
